I decided to upgrade from AM4 and my 5800X to this beast of a cpu, the 7700X. On the one hand, I now have a brand, spanking new AM5 platform and cpu. On the other hand, it was a very expensive upgrade due to the stupidly high early adopter tax. I also had to buy two new modules of M.2 (pcie) SSD’s because AM5 does not support sata based M.2. A very expensive investment indeed.Back to the 7700X. I am very happy. It is definitely faster than my 5800X and notably more snappy in various programs such as video editing and gaming. I can believe AMD’s claims that it is 13% faster than the 5800X.I do not understand why some people (I will come back to this) are complaining about it being too hot, etc. Yes, it does run hot (but so does 12 and 13 gen intel), but the 7700X is nowhere as hot as intel. When I had PBO and auto-OC activated for my 5800X, the Noctua industrial fans on my air cooler were running at full pelt and sounded like a jet engine. The 5800X also ran hot, at up to 70c. In the end, I deactivated PBO and auto-OC to get far better thermals and acoustics (but at a cost of somewhat decreased performance). The 7700X did run hot under load with PBO and auto-OC turned on, as I saw temperatures go up to 57c on tasks. With gaming, it would go up to 65c (depending on the game). At idle, my 7700X would sit at circa 45c.After a bit of tinkering in BIOS and disabling PBO and auto-OC, my 7700X is currently sitting at a very comfortable and constant 35c. This is with a single tower air cooler and two fans (same cooling solution as with my 5800X).Also, during activated PBO and auto-OC, my fans were only intermittently running like jet engines and then would calm down (7700X). With these two features deactivated, my Arctic Freezer Esport34 duo air cooler is now running almost silently. To summarise, my 7700X is definitely running cooler and faster than my previous 5800X under different BIOS scenarios and work loads.Note – For the very first time, AMD has included a built in (integrated) graphics chip for 7 series Ryzen (including my 7700X). I have not yet tested the iGPU, but I will in due course, when the time is right. I will then update my review.Moving on, particularly to one individual who posted a review on 07/10/22 and was whining about the cost of the 7700X and heat output. Yes the release MSRP for the 7700X is over-priced at between £430 and £440 in UK, whilst it is selling for $400 in USA (when the 5800X was released, the UK msrp was £400).IMHO, the 7700X should not be more than £380. Sadly, the current high price is mostly due to the atrocious state of the british economy, with some good old fashioned price gouging thrown in for good measure.I also remember when Zen1 was released in March 2017, the 1800X (which I purchased) was retailing for £500, the 1700X at £400 and 1700 non-X at £340.This individual was also whining about the supposedly bad physical design for Ryzen 7K series cpu as the metal lid is sitting c.4mm higher on the actual chip. He claimed the thermal paste kept dripping down the sides of the metal plate and it was so bad that Noctua were forced to release an AM5 cpu guard (NATPG1).From my own experience, I have had no such issues whatsoever. So this dribbling TP problem comes down to user error and especially competency (more specifically, lack thereof). Mind you, I have been building pc’s since March 2007, so I have a lot of experience.Hurdygurdy then concluded that Ryzen-7 and X670 is very difficult to justify at such absurdly hiked up msrp. He even stated that entry level X670 was grossly over priced at £500 and concluded he would be migrating back to intel, bearing in mind the imminent release of Raptor Lake. Please ignore his review as he is clearly an intel fanboy. First of all, who shells out >£1K for an AM5 platform and then decides he does not like it, due to high msrp and heat issues?. If you did not like the price of AM5 and 7700X, then why did you supposedly buy it in the first place?.Secondly, entry level AM5 mobos do not cost £500. In fact, my top dog Gigabyte Aorus Master X670E cost £500. The entry level X670-P mobo msrp starts at £268. The entry level X670E mobo msrp start at £300.Let me put things in perspective by now comparing the 7700X (8c/16t) to intel Raptor Lake. The 13700K Raptor Lake (8 Performance cores/16t with 8 economy cores/8t) costs £500 and the last generation 12700K Alder Lake (8c/16t) costs £416. This is in stark contrast to the new architecture 7700X which cost £430. So if you want the 13700K, that is an extra £70 you have to shell out. But is it worth the extra expenditure?. I will come to that later on.As mentioned, my AM5 mobo cost £500 and if I look at exactly the same brand/model mobo but for intel platform (Gigabyte Aorus Master, Z790, LGA 1700), then it is costing £620. For around the £500 price point, I am seeing the mid range Z790-F for £480. So the same tier intel mobo is £120 more expensive. Again, is it worth the extra expenditure?.IMHO, it most definitely is not as the Gigabyte AM5 and Z790 variants have very similar features. The only price advantage that the Z790 has over AM5 is that it is compatible with DDR4 and DDR5, whereas AM5 is compatible only with DDR5. TBH, I purchased from Amazon, a Crucial 16GB DDR5 module for £64. So not bad at all.In terms of benchmark comparisons, according to WCCFTECH, RGT, etc the 7700X is virtually on par with the last gen 5900X (12c/24t). That is a very good performance upgrade.According to Hardware Times, the 7700X narrowly beats the i7-13700K in gaming, but the 7700X is slightly slower in (synthetic) content creation.According to benchmarks by Hardware unboxed, the 13700K is only 3% to 7% faster than the 7700X in gaming (dependent on different games) and about 4% to 10% faster in productivity (depending on different productivity tasks).Ultimately, it comes down to buyer preference. I see no benefit is shelling out c. £200 more for an intel platform. On hindsight, I should have upgraded my 5800X to a 5900X (£330 new in June 2022). This would have been the cheapest and most convenient upgrade option. I could then sit tight and wait for the MSRP of AM5 and Ryzen-7 to drop down to a more palatable level (Q1-23), bearing in mind Zen4 global sales have been very poor due to the high prices of Zen4, AM5 mobos and having to migrate to expensive DDR5 RAM. As a result, AMD has made the decision to cut back Zen4 production in order to keep msrp artificially high (instead of maintaining Zen4 production and reducing msrp to sensible levels, which would encourage consumer purchasing). AMD is now adopting the same policies as intel and nvidia.

What is “easy to lock ” supposed to mean in the review features?Anyhoo, this CPU has insane, amazing performance as long as you cool it well. Having 8 cores/16 threads capable of boosting to 5500MHz makes such a difference to smooth gaming, but stress it and each core will try to go as fast as it can until it thermally throttles at 95 deg C. Consequently a single tower air cooler will struggle. I was planning to buy the 7700 but the 7700X (very slightly faster but hotter) was £20 cheaper at the time of purchase. I will be undervolting it as I simply dont need that little bit of additional performance at the expense of a lot more heat, but its nice to have it in reserve for the future. There are faster chips on the market for gaming and multitasking – the 7800X3D or the I7-13700K, but honestly I don’t render animations or compile code or stream games all day long for a living, and I cannot afford an RTX4090 so getting the very fastest CPU possible is moot. Also, I wanted a clear upgrade path, and buying Intel usually means a new motherboard with each new CPU generation, so I nailed my colours to the AM5 mast this time around. One last tip – when applying your cooling solution, I advise carefully spreading your thermal paste before you place the cold plate or air cooler into position. The AM5 IHS has “legs”, and if you make sure your cooler has good thermal contact with the tops of the legs in addition to the centre of the IHS, it can only help keep temps down.

There are various comparisons available. What they fail to mention is that, beyond a certain level, synthetic benchmark cannot be perceived in real life. With 8C16T 7700x fulfills all the current and foreseeable future gaming requirements at affordable prices. Affordable also includes power and cooling requirements. Intel/Amd have better products, however they are exponentially expensive. Wise alternative would be to invest in good gfx card.
